The Song Lyrics

[Intro]
Welcome aboard this service to Brighton
We will be calling at—

[Verse 1]
How could it be that we stopped just like that?
You stole your life back
We part ways, I never listen
Do you think of the night when you packed all my bags?
She stared at the stack
To locate what was missing

[Chorus]
Look what you started by ignoring all the signs
You never changed, still obsessed with losing time
There it goes, there it goes, there it goes
Put your pride aside
You’re just getting by
And I’m the same life-draining man that I’ve always been
Fuck being human, switch my blood for kerosene
There it goes, there it goes, there it goes
I’m not satisfied, but I’m sleeping on a train again

[Verse 2]
Point out the fault that made you want to quit
I’ll cope with the shame
I might deal with it
For your friends who refused to cough up their goodbyes
I’d see you all soon
If I never lied

[Bridge]
When all is said and done
You came just for the ride
The next one has begun
And I, and I
I’m alone on the run
Until our paths collide
Are you upset that I won?
Oh my, oh my

Personal Connection

I remember stumbling upon this song during one of my train journeys. The haunting melody and James Marriott’s captivating voice instantly caught my attention. The lyrics seemed to narrate a story of a broken relationship and the internal struggle the protagonist was facing.

As the train chugged along, the lyrics resonated with my own experiences of lost love and the pain of letting go. It felt like Marriott was speaking directly to me, acknowledging the emotional turmoil and the longing for something more. The song became a soundtrack to my own introspection and a reminder of the complexities of human connections.

The Deeper Meaning

“Sleeping On Trains” delves into the theme of self-reflection and the search for meaning amidst the chaos of life. The line, “Put your pride aside, you’re just getting by” speaks to the struggle of accepting one’s own flaws and shortcomings. It serves as a reminder that sometimes we need to let go of our egos and allow ourselves to be vulnerable in order to find true satisfaction.

The recurring line, “Fuck being human, switch my blood for kerosene” portrays a sense of frustration and a desire to escape the limitations of being human. It encapsulates the yearning for something more, something beyond the ordinary. It’s a raw expression of the internal conflict between embracing our humanity and transcending it.
