The Meaning Behind The Song: A Pearl by Mitski

By David Schmidt |

As a music journalist, I often come across songs that resonate deeply with me. One such song is “A Pearl” by Mitski, which I first heard on a lazy afternoon while browsing through my friend’s vinyl collection. From the moment the smooth chords and Mitski’s haunting vocals filled the room, I was captivated.

“A Pearl” is a track from Mitski’s 2018 album, ‘Be the Cowboy’. Upon listening closely to the lyrics, I was struck by the raw emotions and vulnerability that Mitski expresses. The song delves into the complexities of love, specifically the aftermath of a toxic relationship.

In the verses, Mitski sings, “You’re growing tired of me, you love me so hard and I still can’t sleep.” These lines convey the exhaustion and restlessness that come from being in a relationship filled with turmoil. The narrator feels suffocated, unable to find solace even with the love that is given to them.

The refrain, “Sorry, I don’t want your touch, it’s not that I don’t want you, sorry, I can’t take your touch,” highlights the complications of being in a new, healthy relationship. The narrator is haunted by the past, unable to fully let go of the memories and emotions tied to their previous toxic love. They struggle to accept the love and touch of their current partner, even though they desire it.

The chorus of “A Pearl” reveals the central theme of the song – the lingering effects of a harmful relationship. Mitski sings, “It’s just that I fell in love with a war, and nobody told me it ended, and it left a pearl in my head.” Here, the “pearl” symbolizes the memories and trauma that the narrator holds onto. It glows and affects them every night, drawing them back to a place they shouldn’t go.

Despite being aware that the pearl is detrimental, the narrator finds beauty in it. Mitski’s delivery in this section is haunting and emotive, perfectly conveying the conflicting feelings of desire and pain.

From my interpretation, “A Pearl” serves as a reflection on the aftermath of toxic relationships. It showcases the difficulties of moving on, even when the narrator finds themselves in a better situation. The song explores the internal struggle of embracing a new love while still holding onto the scars of the past.

Mitski’s powerful vocals and introspective lyrics make “A Pearl” a deeply resonant and thought-provoking song. It’s a reminder that healing takes time and that the past can leave an indelible mark on our present.
